PPDT — Picture Perception & Discussion Test
The Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PPDT) is the screening test held at the SSB on the first day of the selection cycle. Roughly half the candidates are sent home the same evening. Only those who clear the PPDT face the main tests — Psychology, GTO and Interview — over the next four days.
This page is the hub for everything we have written on the PPDT — what it is, why it exists, and how to pass it.
What is the PPDT?
The PPDT is a three-stage filter conducted on the morning of Day 1, right after the intelligence test.
- Picture perception and story writing. A picture is shown briefly. You note the setting, characters and situation, then write a short story in the time allotted.
- Individual narration. Each candidate narrates their story to the group in roughly a minute.
- Group discussion. The group then discusses the picture and arrives at a common story.
The assessors are watching all three stages. A great story will not save you if you withdraw from the discussion; a confident discussion will not save you if your story is blank.
What assessors score
The PPDT tests perception, communication and confidence — three traits the rest of the SSB cycle depends on. The assessors are looking for candidates who can observe accurately, express themselves clearly under time pressure, and contribute to a group without dominating it. Without these baseline traits, there is no point reading your TAT story or watching your GTO performance.

Ready to be assessed?
The mock psych test does not include the PPDT (the discussion is impossible to run remotely), but the same assessor who would have read your PPDT story will read your TAT, WAT, SRT and Self Description. Register for the mock test — ₹2,250, report and counselling within a week.
